How has this position become available?

If you’re interviewing for a position asking this question at an early stage during the first interview will be insightful and set you up to do a better job of the interview.

The employers’ response may be…

It’s a replacement hire….

We’ve promoted someone. The previous job holder emigrated, retired, has checked out of work to take a sabbatical…

Or perhaps, the person left, they couldn’t handle the pressure, they weren’t performing.

It’s a growth hire…

We’re expanding. We wish to move into new markets. We wish to deliver better customer service etc.

You may then wish to ask why. Not why someone retired, but how come someone got promoted, you’re growing that’s great. Tell me more. Alternatively, in what ways was the person falling short in performing or what is the nature of the pressure involved in this job… either way, perhaps your lead-in to ask…

I’d love to know more about the job. Tell me more.
